La Settimana Nazionale della Salute degli Occhi si svolge dal 23 al 29 settembre e, in quanto autista di camion, mantenere una buona vista è fondamentale per il proprio lavoro. Optical Express ha riferito che gli incidenti stradali che coinvolgono conducenti con problemi di vista rappresentano circa 2.900 vittime all'anno.

La guida degli autocarri è un ruolo impegnativo dal punto di vista fisico, ma altrettanto impegnativo dal punto di vista visivo, in quanto richiede una vigilanza costante e la capacità di identificare o reagire rapidamente ai cambiamenti delle condizioni stradali. Una scarsa capacità visiva può compromettere la capacità del conducente di valutare le distanze, leggere i segnali e individuare gli altri veicoli, riducendo la sicurezza del conducente e degli altri utenti della strada.

Quali requisiti devono avere gli autisti di camion?

I conducenti devono completare una D4 Medical Assessment al momento della richiesta di una licenza HGV - questo avviene ogni cinque anni dopo i 45 anni e ogni anno dopo i 65 anni. Nell'ambito della visita medica, gli autisti di camion devono sottoporsi a un esame della vista effettuato da un medico, un ottico o un optometrista.

Per superare l'esame, i conducenti devono avere un'acutezza visiva di almeno 0,8 (6/7,5) sulla scala di Snellen nell'occhio migliore e di almeno 0,1 (6/60) nell'altro.

I conducenti di mezzi pesanti del gruppo 2 devono avere un campo visivo orizzontale di almeno 160 gradi, con un'estensione di almeno 70 gradi a destra e a sinistra e di 30 gradi in alto e in basso. Non devono essere presenti difetti entro un raggio di 30 gradi centrali.

Con quale frequenza gli autisti di mezzi pesanti dovrebbero sottoporsi a un esame della vista?

Dopo i 45 anni, i conducenti devono effettuare la valutazione medica D4 ogni cinque anni e ogni anno dopo i 65 anni. Tuttavia, gli ottici raccomandano a tutti gli utenti della strada di sottoporsi a un esame della vista almeno ogni due anni.

Se un conducente riscontra i seguenti sintomi, deve sottoporsi immediatamente a un esame della vista:

  • Mal di testa

  • Stanchezza oculare

  • Pressione dietro gli occhi

  • Visione doppia

  • Difficoltà a vedere durante la notte

  • Aloni intorno alle luci.

Secondo la legge, i datori di lavoro devono assicurarsi che i loro dipendenti siano idonei alla guida: questo può riguardare diversi aspetti, ma la vista è uno di questi. I datori di lavoro devono verificare la vista dei loro conducenti ogni sei mesi, effettuando un controllo della vista della targa a 20 metri di distanza.

Cosa succede se ho bisogno di occhiali o lenti a contatto?

Se un autista di mezzi pesanti ha bisogno di occhiali o lenti a contatto per raggiungere il requisito visivo minimo, non può avere una potenza degli occhiali superiore a otto+ diottrie. Per quanto riguarda le lenti a contatto, non ci sono restrizioni sulla loro potenza.

  • Proteggere gli occhi quando si eseguono operazioni che potrebbero danneggiarli.

  • Indossare occhiali da sole che bloccano il 99% o il 100% dei raggi UVA e UVB.

  • Seguite la regola del 20-20-20: ogni 20 minuti, guardate a 6 metri di distanza per 20 secondi.

  • Cercate di non fumare: il fumo è altrettanto dannoso per gli occhi quanto per il corpo.

Come si differenziano i requisiti visivi dei mezzi pesanti da quelli degli altri utenti della strada?

Gli standard visivi che i conducenti di mezzi pesanti devono soddisfare sono più elevati rispetto a quelli degli altri utenti della strada. Nel Regno Unito, i conducenti devono avere un'acutezza visiva di almeno 0,5 (6/12) sulla scala di Snellen. Inoltre, i conducenti devono essere in grado di leggere da 20 metri una targa automobilistica realizzata dopo il 1° settembre 2001.

  • Algeria, Estonia, Finlandia, Grecia, Ungheria, Italia, Lettonia, Portogallo, Serbia, Spagna e Turchia richiedono test visivi a partire dai 65 anni.

Quali condizioni oculari impediscono di guidare?

È fondamentale informare la DVLA se si soffre di una delle seguenti patologie oculari:

  • Blefarospasmo

  • Cataratta

  • Retinopatia diabetica

  • Glaucoma

  • Perdita degli occhi

  • Degenerazione maculare

  • Visione monoculare

  • Nictalopia

  • Retinite pigmentosa

  • Difetto del campo visivo.

I conducenti devono soddisfare i seguenti standard:

  • Può leggere una targa a 20 metri di distanza

  • Nessuna visione doppia

  • Avere un campo visivo regolare in almeno un occhio.

Se un conducente non è sicuro di soddisfare gli standard visivi per la guida, deve farsi consigliare da un medico di base, un ottico o un oculista.

On the 3rd of December 2024, changes to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) will come into full effect. The new CPC aims to offer better flexibility to drivers returning to the profession and those undertaking mandatory training. We delve into the upcoming changes and how they will impact drivers. Introduced in 2007, the CPC is a mandatory qualification for professional drivers in the UK and EU wanting to drive a range of heavy vehicles, such as HGVs, LGVs, buses, and coaches. Drivers must pass four tests: • Theory• Case study• Practical• Vehicle safety demonstration. Once passed, the CPC lasts for five years and must be renewed by taking 35 hours of periodic training within the five years.The UK government wanted to understand the effectiveness of the Driver CPC. They did this by asking drivers, trainers, and other parties to take a poll. The government focused on two main areas: improving driver choice and attracting more drivers into the industry for example, making it easier for drivers with foreign qualifications to obtain a licence in the UK. The changes to the Driver CPC are categorised into the following:The international Driver CPC is the new name for how the previous Driver CPC worked. The following applies:• Drivers must take 35 hours of CPC training every five years.• The courses must be at least seven hours long. • If splitting a course over a day, a driver must complete it on two consecutive days.• Drivers are allowed to do a total of 12 hours of e-learning.The National Driver CPC provides more flexibility for those wanting to drive in the UK. Drivers can take either:• 35 hours of training every five years.• A combination of 35 hours of National Driver CPC and International Driver CPC training every five years.The flexibility means that:• Training must be at least 3 hours 30 minutes long training providers can offer longer courses. • It does not need to be completed on two consecutive days if it's a split course course providers can set their time limits.• Training can be e-learning.• Drivers can do 12 hours of e-learning towards their overall 35 hours.From the 3rd of December, 2024, drivers will be able to stay qualified by choosing either:1. International Driver CPC National Driver CPCDrivers wanting to return to the profession must take 35 hours of training before returning. However, this will change from the 1st of February, 2025.Drivers with an expired CPC will have new pathways to make returning to driving easier.Drivers have four options:• Undertake 35 hours of International Driver CPC training.• Regain qualification to drive in the UK and EU.• Complete 35 hours of National Driver CPC training.• Regain qualification to drive in the UK only.• Take a seven-hour "return to driving" module.• Regain UK driving qualification instantly.• To drive in the EU, complete 28 additional hours of training within 12 months.• As part of the National Driver CPC training, complete a seven-hour "return to driving" module.• Regain UK driving qualification instantly.• Take 28 additional hours of training (National or International Driver CPC) within 12 months.Drivers must take 35 hours of training (International or National).The rules surrounding Driver CPC cards remain the same drivers must carry their cards when operating vehicles professionally. Before you can obtain your Class 2, you will need to have a full car licence, be over 18, and have a provisional HGV licence. Your provisional HGV licence will consist of two forms, a D2 (This is free) and a D4. A D4 form is your medical and the cost can vary between £50-£120. A Class 1 licence will qualify you to drive a truck over 3,500kg with a trailer of over 750kg. This will cost £115. Overall, qualifying as a Class 1 HGV driver can set you back just under £2,000. However, it’s important to state that once you have obtained your licence, you will be on a decent salary, have job stability, get to travel and gain a sense of community within the trucking world.
